7 Yoga Poses For Diabetes

Yoga can be an excellent addition to a diabetes management plan as it helps reduce stress, improve flexibility, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being. Here are seven yoga poses that may be beneficial for individuals with diabetes:

Child's Pose (Balasana):

Kneel on the floor with your big toes touching and knees hip-width apart.

Sit back on your heels and extend your arms forward, lowering your chest toward the floor.

Rest your forehead on the mat and relax your arms by your sides or alongside your body.

Hold the pose for 1-3 minutes, focusing on deep breathing and relaxation.

Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana):

Start on your hands and knees with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips.

Press into your hands and lift your hips toward the ceiling, straightening your arms and legs.

Keep your heels grounded and lengthen your spine, creating an inverted V shape with your body.

Hold the pose for 3-5 breaths, focusing on elongating the spine and stretching the back of the legs.

Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana):

Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you and feet flexed.

Inhale and lengthen your spine, then exhale as you hinge at the hips and fold forward over your legs.

Reach your hands toward your feet or shins, keeping your back straight.

Hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing deeply and gently releasing into the stretch.

Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana):

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet hip-width apart, heels close to your hips.

Press into your feet and lift your hips toward the ceiling, engaging your glutes and core.

Interlace your hands beneath your lower back and squeeze your shoulder blades together.

Hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing deeply and maintaining stability in the hips.

Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani):

Sit with one side of your body against a wall and your legs extended along the wall.

Lie back and swing your legs up the wall, allowing your hips to come close to or against the wall.

Rest your arms by your sides or place them on your abdomen.

Hold the pose for 5-10 minutes, focusing on relaxation and deep breathing.

Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana):

Lie on your stomach with your legs extended and tops of the feet resting on the mat.

Place your hands beneath your shoulders, elbows close to your body.

Inhale and press into your hands to lift your chest off the mat, keeping your elbows slightly bent.

Lengthen your spine and gaze forward, avoiding compression in the lower back.

Hold the pose for 15-30 seconds, breathing deeply and gently releasing back down.

Corpse Pose (Savasana):

Lie on your back with your legs extended and arms by your sides, palms facing up.

Close your eyes and allow your body to completely relax into the mat.

Focus on your breath, allowing it to become slow and steady.

Remain in the pose for 5-10 minutes, practicing mindfulness and deep relaxation.

Before starting any new exercise or yoga routine, consult with your healthcare provider, especially if you have diabetes or any other medical conditions. Modify the poses as needed to suit your individual needs and abilities, and listen to your body's feedback during practice.
